Talk: The work of the British Trust for Ornithology
Speaker: Jonathan Angell, The British Trust for Ornithology’s Avon representative
Venue: BRLSI, 16-18 Queen Square, Bath, BA1 2HN
Start: 19:30 (Doors open 19:00 for coffee and chat)
Description: Jonathan Angell will update us on the charity’s latest projects collecting scientific data to inform decisions on habitats and conservation and ensure a secure future for birds and nature. The BTO’s priority is a positive impact for birds and people in partnership with others, using robust, objective science. He will explain how surveys (primarily by volunteers) are used and how everyone can get involved in this citizen science, from recording garden birds or monitoring nests to wider countryside surveys. For the last 15 years Jonathan, a former headteacher, has contributed to the BTO’s Breeding Bird Survey, the main scheme monitoring UK population changes, Garden Birdwatch and the Avon Winter Bird Survey, as well as species surveys such as Rookeries and Heronries.
