Talk: From hand lens to AI – a botanist’s journey through changing technologies

1st February 2027 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
£4 – £8

Speaker: Prof. Charles Stirton
Venue: BRLSI, 16-18 Queen Square, Bath, BA1 2HN
Start: 19:30 (Doors open 19:00 for coffee and chat)
Description: Over 50 years in botany, Prof. Stirton has watched our tools change from hand lenses and notebooks to DNA sequencing, digital photography, and now artificial intelligence. Each new wave of technology has reshaped how we explore and understand plants, but it has also made the observations of naturalists more important than ever. Today, every photograph, record, and curious sighting contributes to a global picture of biodiversity that scientists alone could never build. In this talk, he will share how technology has transformed his own work as a plant taxonomist, and why the future of botanical discovery depends on engaged citizen scientists, including groups like Bath Nats.

The society’s talks are now part of the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) programme but Bath Natural History Society members can get discounted tickets to BRLSI Bath natural history talks. This is available at the door; for online purchase in advance a discount code appears in the Autumn-Winter 2026-27 newsletter, which includes a  full guide to buying tickets online at BRLSI.
