Meeting place: small car park at the reserve Explorer 155 (ST78016692). There is space here for about 6 cars, but if possible please park in the public car park in Batheaston (ST779673), free on Sundays, and walk to the site. By car, the site is reached along a private track from Mill Lane, almost opposite (just S of) Bathampton Mill. If walking from the public car park (free on Sundays), cross the river and follow the footpath alongside the river to where it crosses the track, then turn L through gate along track.
Focus: Plants, butterflies and other invertebrates
Description: By kind permission of the Avon Wildlife Trust, we are visiting this reserve to make records on their behalf. The focus will be botanical, however we will record whatever we find, according to available expertise on the day. It is a good site for dragonflies. This site was created as flood mitigation for the A46 Bathampton bypass and has varied habitats including an ox-bow lake. It has a rich flora, with species which are uncommon in this area, for example Meadow-rue (Thalictrum flavum) and Flowering-rush (Butomus umbellatus). Terrain is uneven, with some wet areas, so stout boots are essential. Bring a picnic, plenty of water, and waterproofs / suncream.

Please book with the Leader in advance. Members can find contact details in their Spring/Summer 2024 newsletter. This has several benefits for all meetings: the Leader is aware who is coming and can deal with any queries before the meeting (such as car-sharing, if required); in the unlikely event that arrangements need to change or the meeting has to be cancelled, attendees can all be contacted promptly and easily.
