SUMMARY:Talk: Butterflies and Moths\, Key Indicators of Insect Population Change
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Maurice Avent\nVenue: BRLSI\, 16-18 Queen Square\, Bath\, BA1 2HN\nStart: 19:30 (Doors open: 19:00 for coffee and chat)\nFinish: 21:00\nDescription: Maurice was fortunate to purchase an SSSI valley close to Bath in 1982 for which he has kept records of butterfly populations for 30 years. He was National Chairman of Butterfly Conservation between 2007 and 2010. \nInsects are very much the foundation upon which our planetary diversity of creatures\, including the human race\, depends to survive. Thanks to the bright colours of butterflies and some species of moth\, they are almost the only insects whose populations have been studied for many centuries. Due to their sensitivity to minor environmental changes\, butterflies and moths can be used as indicators of the general health of the entire planetary insect population. \nDoors open 7.00pm\, for coffee and a chat\, with proceedings beginning at 7.30pm\n£3 members and guests \nWheelchair access is available by contacting  BRLSI reception 01225 312084

SUMMARY:Talk: Harvest Mice
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Peter Cooper\nVenue: BRLSI\, 16-18 Queen Square\, Bath\, BA1 2HN\nStart: 19:30 (Doors open: 19:00 for coffee and chat)\nFinish: 21:00\nDescription: Harvest mice are Britain’s smallest rodents. They live among tall grasses and shrubs where they weave an intricate cricket ball-sized nest above the ground. They used to be abundant\, but numbers have reduced due to agricultural intensification and an over-tidying of the countryside. Pete has been involved in breeding harvest mice for re-introduction into historic and newly restored habitats.

SUMMARY:Talk: Natural History Apps and AI: A Blessing Or A Curse?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dave Pole\nVenue: BRLSI\, 16-18 Queen Square\, Bath\, BA1 2HN\nStart: 19:30 (Doors open: 19:00 for coffee and chat)\nFinish: 21:00\nDescription: Many of us use bird ID apps (eg Merlin) or plant ID apps (eg Flora Incognita) on our phones\, and there are a host of others available\, both free and paid. Many of these use AI to link a photo with an identification. Naturalists who have done the hard miles of learning from field guides might feel this is cheating\, and there are many pitfalls for the unwary. This talk will introduce some of these apps\, discuss their accuracy and usefulness and explore some of the large open access natural history databases which can help us to find and record the wildlife we are looking for instead of waiting and hoping \nDoors open 7.00pm\, for coffee and a chat\, with proceedings beginning at 7.30pm\n£3 members and guests \nWheelchair access is available by contacting  BRLSI reception 01225 312084

SUMMARY:Talk: The World of Wasps
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Steve Smailes\nVenue: BRLSI\, 16-18 Queen Square\, Bath\, BA1 2HN\nStart: 19:30 (Doors open: 19:00 for coffee and chat)\nFinish: 21:00\nDescription: In this illustrated talk\, Steve will cover the social and the solitary aculeate wasps of our islands\, and briefly touch on the parasitic wasps too. Most people are acutely aware of the ‘social’ wasps from an early age; indeed\, they often make an instant\, enduring and painful impression. These are the bêtes noirs which give all wasps a bad name\, but they are interesting too. The solitary wasps introduced themselves to the speaker more gently and gradually\, over 30 years or more.  They can be very secretive\, need seeking out and are intensely aware of scrutiny\, but are fascinating to watch once discovered. \nDoors open 7.00pm\, with proceedings beginning at 7.30pm\n£3 members and guests \nWheelchair access is available by contacting  BRLSI reception 01225 312084
