Langford Lakes and Battlesbury Hill

19th April 2022 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Leader: Phillip Delve
Meet: 10.00 Langford Lakes WWT Reserve Car Park. Gr SU 038369. Landranger 184/Explorer 130.
Directions: This is a two-centre meeting, beginning at Langford Lakes, followed by Battlesbury Hill near Warminster on the return journey.
Langford Lakes: Follow the A36 south, past the A303 junction and turn right for Steeple Langford. Turn right in the village, just beyond the church. The reserve is to left, just over the river bridge.
Battlesbury Hill: Take the Imber Rd from Warminster through the army camp. Before the steep rise, turn right towards Battlesbury Barracks along a tree lined avenue. Park on the wide concrete track to left just before the barrack gates. Gr ST 894453 Landranger 184/Explorer 143.
Finish: 15.00.
Focus: Spring migrant and wetland birds and insects. Chalk downland at Battlesbury Hill.
Description: Two kilometres of level paths around Langford Lakes, water meadow and woodland. There are several hides and toilet facilities here. Bring packed lunch, as the cafe may be closed.
At Battlesbury Hill there is a long steady slope up the hill, with some uneven ground and a single kissing gate. The only facilities near Battlesbury Hill are back in Warminster. As Battlesbury is exposed, we may not visit this second site in poor weather.
